How to Stop Your Dog from Bolting Out the Front Door
If your dog often bolts out the front door, that may be a very big problem for you. Having your dog bolting out of the front door can be dangerous for him and annoying for you. However, this problem is very easy to solve. You just have to be persistent and consistent in training your dog properly.
You have to train your dog to make it more disciplined and well behaved. Obedience classes will help you get your dog under control. Once you notice that your dog keeps on bolting out of your front door, you should start this training immediately. Below are the steps that you should follow:
a. Get the help of one of your housemates. Ask him to hold your dog by the collar as you position yourself at your doorway.
b. Let them step back away from the door. Approach the door.
c. As you grab the knob, your dog will probably come running towards the door. Look him in the eye and tell him to “stay”.
d. Raise your hands to your chest level, with your palms facing outward. Repeat the word “stay”.
e. If your dog doesn’t pay attention to you, try putting your hands across his face and repeat the word “stay”.
f. Your hand should not come down at him from above, but directly at her face front on.
g. Open the door a bit. If your dog tries to move towards it, shut it again.
h. Correct the dog’s attention by saying “No”.
